Environmental Qualification Project:

In order to ensure the operation of Nuclear Safety Related Systems during and after any Nuclear Accident, OPG initiated the Environmental Qualification Program also called EQ. Under this Program all the nuclear safety systems and their components were tested and analyzed against high temperature and radiation exposure as per defined by following International Standards.

  • IEEE 1, IEEE 98, IEEE 99, IEEE 101, IEEE 323, IEEE 383

I was responsible for the analysis of following items.

  • Cable Qualification Analysis for Power and Control applications with PVC, XLPE, and EPR insulation.

  • Component Qualification Analysis for Control Valves, Field Instruments and Switches

  • Validation of the software for the design life calculation by producing all the calculations showing each step individually.

  • Reviewing the reports prepared by other engineers for the technical applicability and consistency.

The program was started in early 1999 and ended at the end of 2001. It then went into implementation phase where I moved to one of the OPG's Nuclear facility at Bruce, Ontario. This generating station is managed by Bruce Power, a joint venture of three different multinational companies.
